Autumn Season Lawn Care Tips

Just like the rest of the plants in your garden, your lawn grows and responds differently depending on the time of year. At the beginning of Autumn, there are many different factors you should consider when it comes to caring for your lawn.

Mowing:

Around mid autumn, when the days are beginning to get cooler, you should switch the mower to catching mode rather than mulching mode. This is due to the fact that during the warmer months grass clippings will quickly break down and add nutrients to the soil, whereas during the cooler months decomposition takes longer, and could potentially cause fungal issues.

Fertilising:

When thinking about feeding, it is a great thing to do during the autumn months, especially for grass like buffalo, couch and kikuyu. One application of fertiliser will last you until winter. Fertilising your lawn will green your grass up ahead of winter, as well as making it stronger and more likely to resist damage from harsh winter conditions even frost. Try using our Sir Walter Fertiliser or Lawn Paint, which will help provide essential nutrients to your grass to stimulate deep root growth.

Watering:

During autumn, it can be easy to become complacent when it comes to watering, but it is important to remember that windy weather can be just as drying as a hot day. A good indication to work out if your lawn is feeling drought-stressed, and needs watering is when your grass blades look less lustrous. Although, when you do water, it is best to do it in the morning to avoid your grass sitting wet for too long and developing fungal disorders.

• Watering – Established Sir Walter lawns will need little to no watering during Autumn unless there are extreme weather conditions.
• Mowing – Mowing will only need to be done around once a month, keep your Sir Walter around 40mm.
• Fertilising – Sir Walter will need fertiliser before Winter.

Couch:

• Watering – Established Couch lawns will need little to no watering during Autumn unless there are extreme weather conditions.
• Mowing – Mowing will only need to be done around once a month, if that.
• Fertilising – Couch grass will need to be fertilised with a high nitrogen fertiliser in Autumn.

Kikuyu:

• Watering – Established Kikuyu lawns will need little to no watering during Autumn unless there are extreme weather conditions.
• Mowing – Mowing will only need to be done around once a month, keep your Kikuyu around 40mm.
• Fertilising – Kikuyu grass will need to be fertilised with a high nitrogen fertiliser in Autumn.
